Cohousing is popular because it's a way for people to create community.

Humans are essentially social beings. Today, the fast pace and huge scale of life on this populous planet leaves many feeling both crowded and alone. Community rarely just happens. To fill the gap, intentional communities are forming. Cohousing is part of this intentional trend back to personal, civic participation.

Cohousing meets the modern need to belong to a close-knit community of mutually encouraging friends. It has proven popular with old and young, with singles, couples, parents, children, and perhaps most importantly, teenagers.

Cohousing began in Denmark in the 1970's and came to the United States in the 1980's. Today, there are over 75 cohousing communities built and occupied in the United States, with many more in the planning and development stages. For an overview of cohousing, go to the www.cohousing.org site.

In the greater Washington D.C. area, there are now 7 cohousing communities! Cohousing is hot! Go to www.cohomac.org to see all the DC-area cohousing groups.
